Quality in the Classroom (South Carolina)

SOUTH CAROLINA: Inspiring the Study of Science and Math

In South Carolina, BellSouth Quality in the Classroom helps middle- and high-school teachers to develop the requisite content-knowledge of math and science so that they may inspire more South Carolina students to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering.

Led by the South Carolina Department of Education, this program uses a nationally recognized pre-engineering curriculum, Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to build teachers’ content-knowledge. This comprehensive, intensive training program is specifically designed to prepare teachers to use cutting-edge technology.

In addition, students are encouraged to pursue opportunities in science, technology and engineering through their participation in South Carolina’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League State Tournament and the FIRST Regional Robotics Competition. In these competitions, teachers, students and experts are given a project in which they work together on a common problem.

BellSouth volunteers support the program by mentoring students in math and science, and by working with them on Lego or robotics projects. BellSouth volunteers also help teachers to develop unique lesson plans. Findings are shared throughout the state so that the program may be replicated elsewhere.
